CAUCASIAN KURDS ( GEORGİA )
(2025)
Today, there are approximately 15,000 Yazidis and Muslim Kurds living in Georgia.
The majority of Kurds in Georgia are Yazidis who were displaced from Kars, Ardahan, and Van during World War I. The rest are Yazidis who settled in Georgia in the 18th century.
The first large-scale deportation of Muslim Kurds living within the borders of the USSR was carried out on November 28, 1937, based on a decision issued by the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs on security grounds. The second major deportation took place in 1944 for the same reason.
Tens of thousands of deported Kurds were forced to settle in small groups in different regions of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
The Kurds are not subject to any pressure or assimilation by the Georgian government, but migration to Russia and other post-Soviet countries continues for economic reasons.
